FAQ:
I want to build a new home. What is the procedure to get a building permit?
1. Your first step is to hire a legal surveyor to perform a survey on the property. Survey should include:
a) Full information about the property: property size, legal description, civic address, easements, right of ways, etc.
b) topographical elevations
c) location & description of the existing trees on the property
d) location & size of the existing structures on the property
- As you are waiting for legal surveyor to finish his plans, make a wish-list: write down a short description of your future house: number & description of bedrooms & bathrooms, info on kitchen size & style, description of living & dining room as well as family room, etc. Include pictures of the homes that you like from the outside and find magazines pictures that can fully present your interior design preferences.
2. Second step is to find a Professional Designer (Architectural Technologist) to prepare design & building permit ready plans.
3. Once completed building permit ready architectural plans should be taken to the structural engineer to prepare structural design and necessary schedules. (Be aware that plans will not obtain building permit if structural plans are not submitted.)
4. Apply for a building permit. (If you already know a general contractor that will build your house you can leave this step for him to do.)
